Plus! Course Content

Our Plus! Course is for students who can already speak English but have a few problems when talking about some subjects. Therefore, we have designed a course that deals with very different areas, such as the language of discussions,  travelling through the world, the art of communication, customs and tradition, advertising, the changing face of the tourism industry, writing, crime and punishment, tea, music, globalization and today’s technology.

  • We’ll start our Plus! Course by looking at  language used in discussions. After reading the grammar page we will do two exercises, one relating to man's exploitation of animals in sport and another in which we look at the same language in a business context.

  • We’ll then move on to an article from Orange.co.uk giving you suggestions for 10 "must visit" holiday destinations.

  • Writing is often neglected when learning a language. In this unit you’ll have the chance to be creative with a writing activity.

  • Now, have you been in France? or have you been to France? This session's grammar focuses on prepositions connected with travel.

  • With the advent of email, the art of letter writing is gradually dying out. Emails arrive immediately and cost nothing to send - but what are the disadvantages? We will read an article from The Daily Telegraph and answer the questions.

  • Television shopping channels are prolific in the USA - you can watch them 24 hours a day. But how many of the products on offer do we really need? We will read an article and then do some exercises.

  • This session focuses on the changes taking place in the tourism industry and the emergence of a new type of tourism - that of Responsible Tourism.

  • This unit looks at how to write some basic letters and gives you some common expressions to help you build the framework of your letter.

  • Do you go on holiday every year? Or do you go every year on holiday? This session's grammar focuses on word order.

  • The Beatles are undoubtedly one of the most famous groups of all time. But what do you know about them? We will read about them from Liverpool City Portal and do the comprehension exercise which follows.

  • We will talk about what you listen to and also about illegal downloading. We shall read and listen to a short BBC Learning article on illegal file sharing. We will also be discussing the messages some songs carry now. As an example, we’ll listen to a song by Pink and decide what her message is.

  • What exactly is globalisation?  In the exercises you will complete a definition of globalisation and then listen to a podcast from the BBC on the growth of this phenomenon.

  • We all travel every day - short journeys, long journeys, business trips, holidays - and it seems that we have more and more to complain about.  Our conversation of this week will focus on your own personal experiences, while most of the vocabulary and the article will look at the problems of air travel.

  • We will focus this unit on modern technology.  The 'History of Apple' exercise in this session will also provide some revision of some of the grammar structures you have learned so far during the course.

  • The end?  Of course, the end brings a test. We will use the last session to test what you’ve learned and to ask you about what you would like to do next.
